Gourock stars in It's a Knockout - 1975
12 JanuaryIt's not often that Gourock welcomes one of the UK's most popular TV, but that's what happened in 1975, when a team from Gourock took part in an episode of the BBC's 'It's a Knockout', held at Darroch Park.
The local team taking on rivals from Kilmarnock and Ayr in a UK heat of the pan-European show, which was the fifth in the 1975 series of It's a Knockout. The games were played at Darroch Park in Gourock on Sunday 11th May 1975. The programme was broadcast on BBC1 on Friday 20th June at 7.30pm.
The programme was a closely fought contest, with Kilmarnock winning by a single point, and the local team from Gourock unfortunately finishing last. The winning team from Kilmarnock went on to take part in an edition of the European show, Jeux Sans Frontieres at Mannheim in July.
The Gourock team coach was a German, Rudi Stetz, who had been living in Scotland for twenty years and had developed a Scots accent. He was looking forward to taking his team to the German Jeux Sans Frontieres heat in Mannheim, but it proved too difficult a task for his Gourock team.
